Individual Therapy
“You are the sky. Everything else – it’s just the weather.”
Individual therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, is a process in which a person works one-on-one with a trained therapist in a safe, caring, and confidential environment. The primary goal is to help you understand your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, and to address personal issues, challenges, or mental health concerns. The therapy is tailored to the your unique needs and goals, allowing for a personalized approach to treatment.
During the first 1-4 sessions we will develop your therapy goals and come up with a plan to meet those goals, while also getting to know each other and building safety in our relationship.
Many people who come to me for individual therapy have goals to work through the effects of trauma, understand and explore racial, gender, and/ or sexual identities, improve relationships, or to manage stress, anxiety, and depression.
Together we will process emotions that come up on a week-to-week basis and develop coping skills, problem-solving strategies, and emotional regulation techniques to handle your life’s challenges more effectively.
The length of treatment can vary widely, depending on the nature and severity of the issues being addressed. Typically, I work long term with clients, often over 1 year. We usually start with short term goals, like symptom relief and working through a crisis or pressing issues. Once those goals are achieved, we move into depth work, which involves exploring the unconscious aspects of the mind to achieve personal growth, healing, and self-awareness.
Generally, I see clients weekly until they have accomplished their therapy goals, after which we taper down to bi-weekly or monthly as they head towards therapy graduation.
